How Important is GRE for Ph.D Programs?

Recommended Posts

How important are GRE scores when applying to phd programs? Are they deal-breakers?  Are they as important as GPA? Do they not matter at all?  Any help would be appreciated.

GRE scores are only one part of the picture. They aren't the sole definers of your application nor should they be ignored!! It also does depend on how well the other parts of your app are. If you have a lowerish GPA, a nice GRE score can really balance out your application. Also, a very low GRE score with a high GPA could raise eye-brows also. But again, it's only a small part. Don't forget that your letters of recommendation are also extremely important as well, and your essays.

Stephanie has the right idea. GRE scores are an important part of somebody's application. However, other factors are crucial as well (like she mentioned.) Every program is also different, and most programs will state on their homepage the average GRE percentile for those admitted into the program. This can help you gauge your competitiveness for a program, and also offer you a target score if you have not taken your test yet.

Some of the programs I am applying to have stated what their average GRE scores are, and some will automatically screen you if your GRE falls beneath a minimum threshold. Seems to be the case on some of the more competitive programs I am applying to.
